Corporate Energy Transition Pathways under the Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals

On June 22, the “2021 Forum on High-Quality Energy Development,” co-hosted by China Energy News and the China Institute for Energy Economics, was held in Beijing. Held at a pivotal moment—marking both the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the inaugural year of the 14th Five-Year Plan—the conference was themed “Carrying Forward the Century-Old Red Legacy to Accelerate Green Transformation and Development.” During the roundtable discussion, representatives from various enterprises explored emerging technologies, new business models, and the opportunities and challenges confronting today’s companies.
Wu Linyong, Deputy General Manager of LONGi Clean Energy, stated: The dual-carbon goals present both opportunities and challenges for new-energy enterprises.
The goals of carbon neutrality and peaking carbon emissions are having a profound impact on, and driving transformative changes within, companies engaged in the manufacturing and construction of new‑energy products.
First, it enables enterprises to reassess their own positioning. Under the dual-carbon goals, new energy—particularly photovoltaics—will serve as a primary power source, heralding a bright outlook for both the industry and individual companies.
Second, enterprises bear significant responsibility. As photovoltaics are set to become the primary source of power in the future, how can they better support the development of a new‑type power system? And how can PV companies play their part on both the generation and consumption sides? These are pressing questions that demand urgent consideration.
Third, we need to shift our perspective. In the past, the focus was largely on the generation side, with efforts aimed at increasing the share of clean energy. The dual‑carbon goals, however, call for us to adopt a “carbon‑centric” mindset, helping regions and industries achieve decarbonization—presenting both opportunities and challenges.
We will develop solutions tailored to the specific characteristics of each region and industry. For example, in response to the diverse resource endowments and varying electricity‑and‑energy mixes across regions, we will promote region‑specific approaches such as photovoltaic‑based environmental governance and ecological restoration. By integrating these efforts with the production processes of sectors like mining and chemicals, we will help them identify more effective decarbonization pathways.
