How to Use Wind to Generate Electricity
Author: Ningbo Xuanli
Wind has been harnessed by humans since ancient times—primarily through windmills for pumping water and grinding grain. What has captured people’s interest, above all, is how to use wind to generate electricity.

Wind is a new energy source with enormous potential. As many may recall, in the early 18th century, a violent storm that swept across Britain and France destroyed 400 windmills, 800 houses, 100 churches, and more than 400 sailing vessels, while injuring thousands of people and uprooting 250,000 large trees. In terms of tree‑uprooting alone, the wind unleashed a power output of ten million horsepower—equivalent to 7.5 million kilowatts (with one horsepower equal to 0.75 kilowatt)—in just a matter of seconds! Estimates suggest that the world’s exploitable wind‑energy resources amount to roughly 10 billion kilowatts, nearly ten times the global hydropower generation capacity. Moreover, the energy derived from burning coal worldwide each year is only about one‑third of the energy that wind can provide in a single year. For these reasons, both domestically and internationally, great emphasis is being placed on harnessing wind power for electricity generation and developing renewable energy sources.
